The Wire

Since there pretty much isn’t anything going on tv-wise over the summer (with the exclusion of So You Think You Can Dance and Project Runway-one of my faves), Matt and I took up watching The Wire. This is a show that we’ve been hearing so many good things about but just never got a chance to watch. Some of my favorite writer’s love this show, and well, I am a follower so I figured I’d watch it over the summer.

Without delving into the show much, The Wire is an HBO series that portrays both the Baltimore police unit and the lives of the people on the streets selling/doing drugs or committing other crimes. I like this show because you end up feeling for some of the dealers (not all of them, don’t worry. I won’t show up at your door trying to bust a cap in your ass) but I like how it shows the good in some of the “bad” people and the flaws in some of the" good" people. Also, any tv show that prompts Matt to send me a random email in the middle of the day with “YO STRING! WHERE’S WALLACE? WHERE’S WALLACE, STRING?” in the body gets my vote. We are currently a few episodes into season two. Amy Ryan is introduced in this season and I hear that the writers of The Office wrote the character of Holly specifically for her after seeing her on The Wire. (I loooove her on The Office, so thank you Wire for bringing a little Hollyday into our lives).

I've watched The Wire off and on over the years and made sure I watched as much as I could this past season, its last. There's just something about gritty Baltimore dramas that suck me in (Homicide: Life on the Street was one of my faves back in the day). For a show that was so well written and so well acted over the years it's a shame that it was only ever nominated for 1 Emmy (for writing and didn't win)! Everyone thought this year would be the year it got its due, to make up for past years, but no, it was left out again! It's hard to see how though. It's hard to ignore a TV show with so many hot guys! :) Really, that was my motivation. ;)

You watch The Wire?! I’m barely on the second season, so I don’t know what all happens, but isn’t it a great show? I truly agree with you that the writing and the acting is just amazing. It’s so hard to believe that they only got one measly writing emmy nom this year. What the heck do they have to do to get acknowledged?! It has so much critical acclaim.

This show tore my heart out the other day though. Man, it was rough.

Plus it doesn’t hurt that we get some eye candy.

I sort of watch The Wire. I should have been more clear. I started off watching it, only managed to watch a few eps in the middle seasons, but I think I watched most, if not all, of the eps this last season. Long live Stringer Bell! I hated all the political stuff. It was a necessary part of the show but it was sooooo boring to me. Oh, and FYI, that writing Emmy nom was from 2005, not even this year! I think it has to be one of the most blatantly ignored shows in Emmy history considering the amount of critical acclaim it has received.

OK, my bad, you're right, they were nominated this year. So they now have 2 writing noms. Sorry!

Long Live Stringer?! Are you trying ot kill me. I hate him right now for ordering to have Wallace killed in the first season and having D'Angelo killed in the second season. He is a different kind of drug dealer though. I find it fascinating that he takes business classes in order to apply it to the drug thing.

LOL! I said that more because I like watching Idris Elba. Did you know he's actually British? Dominic West is too. It is weird to see people who do such horrible things have some sort of moral code about other things.
